Individual Therapy for Mental Health

Individual therapy within a Partial Hospitalization Program provides focused time with a clinician while remaining integrated with group therapy, psychiatric care, skills practice, and discharge planning. Sessions may review symptoms, treatment goals, barriers, coping strategies, and how to apply new skills outside program hours. The frequency and focus of individual sessions are determined by the PHP model and each participant’s individualized treatment plan.

Focused Individual Work Inside a Structured PHP

Individual sessions in PHP are designed to support the broader treatment plan rather than operate as a separate weekly therapy track. They give participants focused time to review current symptoms, clarify goals, discuss barriers to participation, and connect material from groups to personal circumstances.

Persistent stress, anxiety, or sadness

Difficulty managing emotions or reactions

Relationship or communication struggles

Major life changes or personal loss

Feeling overwhelmed or mentally exhausted

This focused work can help a participant identify which skills need more practice, prepare for a difficult conversation, examine a recurring pattern, or address a concern that is not appropriate to process fully in a group setting.

How Individual Sessions Function in PHP

The clinician uses individual sessions to assess progress, reinforce the PHP treatment plan, and coordinate with the rest of the team. Depending on clinical needs, a session may include goal review, coping practice, motivational work, safety planning, trauma-informed stabilization, or preparation for care after PHP. Information relevant to coordinated treatment may be shared within the clinical team in accordance with privacy requirements.

When Individual Support Adds Value During PHP

Individual support may be especially useful when symptoms interfere with group participation, a participant is working through ambivalence about treatment, or personal circumstances affect progress. The frequency and focus of sessions depend on the PHP model and the individualized plan.

Feel overwhelmed by stress or emotional struggles

Want guidance navigating relationships or life transitions

Need structured support for anxiety or depression

Prefer one-on-one therapy rather than group treatment

PHP participants still benefit from the shared learning and structure of group treatment; individual sessions help tailor that broader experience to the person’s needs and goals.

Frequently asked questions

Our team can explain how individual sessions fit within Waterview’s PHP.

Is individual therapy included in PHP?

Individual sessions may be included within Waterview's Partial Hospitalization Program as part of an individualized treatment plan. PHP also emphasizes structured group treatment and coordinated psychiatric care.

How is individual therapy different in PHP?

Individual therapy in PHP is coordinated with the broader treatment team and focuses on current symptoms, treatment goals, skills application, safety, barriers, and preparation for the next level of care.

What concerns can be addressed during individual sessions?

Sessions may address anxiety, depression, trauma-related symptoms, mood instability, substance use concerns, relationship stress, coping patterns, and other needs identified through assessment.

Is individual therapy confidential?

Clinical privacy requirements apply, with legal and safety-related exceptions explained during admission. Relevant information may be shared within the treatment team to coordinate care.

What happens to individual therapy after PHP?

The aftercare plan may include continued outpatient therapy, psychiatry, IOP, recovery supports, or other services based on clinical needs. Review the admissions process for how Waterview coordinates care.

6. How much does IOP cost with insurance?

It varies - but most major health insurance plans do cover outpatient addiction treatment, including IOP. What you'll actually pay out of pocket depends on your specific plan, your deductible, and whether the treatment center is in-network. The best move is to call the treatment center directly and have them verify your benefits before you start. Most facilities have staff who handle this regularly and can walk you through exactly what to expect.
