Mental Health Therapist

What is individual therapy, and how does it work?

Individual therapy is a one-on-one process between a client and therapist designed to explore thoughts, emotions, and behaviors in a safe, private environment. The therapist helps identify patterns, develop coping strategies, and work toward personal goals.

How long does individual therapy last, and how often will I meet?

Sessions typically occur once a week and last about 45–60 minutes. The duration of therapy depends on your needs—it may be short-term for specific issues or ongoing for deeper personal growth.

How do I know if I’m choosing the right therapist for me?

The right therapist should make you feel comfortable, respected, and understood. Look for someone who specializes in your concerns and whose style feels like a good fit. Waterview Behavioral Health helps match clients with therapists best suited to their goals.

Is what I share in therapy confidential?

Yes. Everything shared in therapy is confidential except in specific cases where safety is at risk (e.g., harm to self or others, abuse of a child or vulnerable adult). Confidentiality is explained in detail during your first session.

Will I have “homework” or tasks outside of my sessions?

Often, yes. Homework may include journaling, practicing coping skills, or completing reflection exercises. These tasks help reinforce what you learn in therapy and support progress between sessions.
