Why Group Therapy Is Central to PHP

Group therapy is a primary treatment setting within many Partial Hospitalization Programs. Waterview uses clinician-led groups to help participants build coping skills, recognize patterns, communicate more effectively, and receive support while remaining connected to life at home. Because PHP provides a higher level of structure than standard outpatient care, the team can revisit skills across the treatment schedule and help participants apply them between program days.

Skills Groups Within the PHP Treatment Day

PHP groups may address emotion regulation, distress tolerance, cognitive patterns, trauma-informed coping, relapse prevention, healthy boundaries, and preparation for step-down care. CBT- and DBT-informed exercises are used to turn concepts into practical actions. Clinicians guide participation, monitor group safety, and connect group themes with each participant’s individual treatment goals.

Structured Group Support at the PHP Level of Care

The PHP schedule allows participants to learn a skill, practice it in a supported setting, and return with questions about how it worked outside treatment hours. That feedback loop helps the team identify barriers sooner and reinforce strategies throughout the episode of care. The number and focus of groups depend on Waterview’s program schedule and the participant’s individualized plan.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Our team can answer questions about group therapy and what to expect in Waterview’s PHP.

What is the role of group therapy in PHP?

Group therapy provides structured opportunities to learn coping skills, practice communication, receive clinician guidance, and reduce isolation. It is one part of Waterview's broader Partial Hospitalization Program.

How are PHP group members selected?

Participants complete a clinical assessment before admission. The team considers safety, treatment needs, readiness, and whether the available groups are appropriate for the individual's goals.

What topics may PHP groups cover?

Topics may include CBT and DBT-informed skills, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, communication, relapse prevention, trauma-informed education, and preparation for care after PHP.

Is group therapy confidential?

Participants are expected to respect group privacy, and clinicians explain program expectations and legal limits of confidentiality. Staff cannot guarantee how another participant will behave outside the program.

Does PHP also include individual support?

PHP may include individual therapy, psychiatric care, medication management, and case-management support based on the individualized treatment plan. Review the admissions process to understand next steps.

6. How much does IOP cost with insurance?

It varies - but most major health insurance plans do cover outpatient addiction treatment, including IOP. What you'll actually pay out of pocket depends on your specific plan, your deductible, and whether the treatment center is in-network. The best move is to call the treatment center directly and have them verify your benefits before you start. Most facilities have staff who handle this regularly and can walk you through exactly what to expect.
