UNDERSTANDING YOUR OPTIONS

What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program?

PHP is the most intensive level of outpatient care available – structured enough to produce real clinical progress, flexible enough to let you go home at night.

Inpatient / Residential

Most Intensive
24-hour supervised care, away from home

PHP – Day Treatment

Intensive, Flexible
5–6 hours/day, go home every evening

Intensive Outpatient (IOP)

Moderate Intensity
3–4 hours/day, 3–5 days per week

Standard Outpatient

Least Intensive
Weekly or bi-weekly therapy sessions

PHP at Waterview means you receive hospital-level clinical intensity through an in-person daytime program - including psychiatry, group therapy, individual therapy, medication management, and skill-building - then return to your own home, family, and community each evening. You keep your life. You get the care your situation actually requires.

PHP is the right fit when:

✔ Symptoms are too severe for weekly therapy alone

✔ You've completed residential or inpatient care and need structured step-down support

✔ A mental health crisis requires intensive stabilization - without hospitalization

✔ Co-occurring addiction and mental health conditions need simultaneous treatment

✔ Previous outpatient attempts haven't produced lasting results

✔ You need more support, but work, school, or family responsibilities require you to stay home

What makes Waterview's PHP different:

✔ No "one-size-fits-all" treatment - every plan is built for you

✔ Comprehensive care for complex and co-occurring mental health needs

✔ Family therapy integration from day one - not bolted on at the end

✔ Veterans and first responders served through dedicated pathways (VA CCN, TRICARE)

✔ Step-down to Mission Reset IOP option available when clinically appropriate

✔ Wallingford's most accessible location - I-91, I-84, I-95 corridors

✔ No referral needed - self-referral and family referrals welcome

We use evidence-based therapies to support recovery, build resilience, and improve overall well-being.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Evidence-Based Talk Therapy

Identifies and reframes unhelpful thought patterns that contribute to anxiety, depression, and emotional distress. Helps individuals develop healthier coping skills and more balanced ways of thinking.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

Skills for Emotional Regulation and Resilience

Focuses on emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness. Particularly beneficial for individuals experiencing intense emotions, trauma-related challenges, or personality disorders.

Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR)

Specialized Trauma Recovery Therapy

An evidence-based approach that helps individuals process and heal from traumatic experiences. Often used to reduce symptoms associated with PTSD, complex trauma, and distressing life events.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

Present-Moment Awareness for Lasting Change

Combines mindfulness practices with therapeutic techniques to increase self-awareness, reduce stress, and strengthen healthy coping strategies for everyday life.

Trauma-Focused Therapy

Healing from the Impact of Trauma

Provides a safe and supportive environment to address the emotional, psychological, and behavioral effects of trauma while building resilience and long-term emotional wellness.

Mental Health Conditions Treated in our PHP Program

Our PHP is built for adults facing a wide range of mental health challenges - including cases where both occur at the same time (dual diagnosis). We treat the whole person, not just the primary diagnosis.

Dual Diagnosis at Waterview: Some adults seeking PHP have both a mental health condition and a substance use issue. Most programs treat one or the other. We treat both, simultaneously, with an integrated clinical team - because treating only half the picture rarely leads to lasting recovery.

FAMILY-CENTERED CARE

Recovery Is a Family Journey. We Treat It That Way.

At Waterview, family involvement isn't a checkbox on an intake form. It's woven into every phase of treatment - because the relationships around a person in recovery either strengthen healing or sabotage it.

We work with families directly - not to blame or diagnose them, but to equip them with the understanding, communication tools, and coping strategies that make home a place of recovery, not relapse.

Weekly Family Therapy

Scheduled sessions with your loved one's primary clinician to address communication, boundaries, and healing as a unit.

Family Psychoeducation

Structured education about the diagnosis, treatment process, and how families can actively support – not enable – recovery.

Caregiver Support Pathways

Resources and referrals specifically for spouses, parents, and caregivers navigating the emotional weight of supporting someone in recovery.

Discharge & Aftercare Planning

Families participate in the aftercare plan – not just the client. You leave knowing what comes next and how to support it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What is a partial hospitalization program (PHP) and who is it for?

A partial hospitalization program provides intensive, structured mental health treatment - typically 4-5 hours per day, 5 days a week - without requiring an overnight hospital stay. PHP is right for adults who need more support than weekly outpatient therapy can provide, but don't need 24-hour inpatient supervision. It's commonly used after a residential program, during a mental health crisis that doesn't require hospitalization, or when previous outpatient treatment hasn't worked.

Q2. How long does a PHP program last at Waterview?

The typical PHP duration at Waterview is 4–8 weeks, though this varies based on individual clinical progress and insurance authorization. Some clients stabilize and transition to our IOP program in 3–4 weeks; others benefit from a longer PHP stay. Length of stay is always clinically driven - never arbitrary. Your treatment team reviews progress weekly and adjusts the plan accordingly.

Q3. Does PHP fit around work, school, or family responsibilities?

Yes - this is one of PHP's core advantages over residential or inpatient treatment. Our program runs Monday through Friday, with clients going home each evening and maintaining their family life, parenting responsibilities, and essential commitments outside of program hours. Many clients continue working part-time, apply for an intermittent FMLA, full FMLA or adjust work schedules temporarily. Our admissions team can discuss scheduling specifics when you call.

Q4. Is PHP covered by insurance?

PHP is covered as an intensive level of care under most major insurance plans. Waterview is in-network with Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Magellan, Yale Health, VA Community Care Network (CCN), and TRICARE. We verify your specific benefits at no cost before your first appointment. Call (860) 421-6829 to begin the verification process - it typically takes less than 1 hour.

Q5. What's the difference between PHP and IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program)?

PHP is more intensive than IOP. PHP involves 4-5 hours of clinical programming per day, five days a week. IOP typically involves 3 hours, three to five days per week. Clinically, PHP is used when someone requires active daily monitoring, psychiatric oversight, and intensive skill-building. IOP is the appropriate next step once a client has stabilized in PHP and needs less frequent structure. Many Waterview clients move from PHP to IOP as part of their step-down recovery journey.

Q6. Do I need a referral to start PHP at Waterview?

No referral is required. You can contact Waterview directly - by phone, online form, or walk-in - and our admissions team will guide you through the clinical assessment and insurance verification process. Family members can also inquire on behalf of a loved one.

Q7. Can PHP treat both mental health and substance use at the same time?

Absolutely - this is a core strength of Waterview's program. Dual diagnosis treatment, which means we treat co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders simultaneously, with an integrated clinical team. Research consistently shows that treating one without the other produces significantly worse outcomes. If you have both, you've come to the right place.

Q8. What happens after PHP? What's the next step?

Most clients transition from PHP to our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), which provides continued clinical support with more flexibility. After IOP, the step-down continues to standard outpatient therapy, ongoing psychiatric care, peer support groups, and alumni programming. Aftercare planning begins in your first week of PHP - we never let clients leave without a clear, coordinated plan for what comes next.
